THE GREAT OUTDOORS & THE BADLANDS

SO MUCH TO EXPLORE & ENJOY

The Untamed Wilderness

Prairie County is home to an abundance of flora and fauna, including pronghorn antelope, whitetail and mule deer, as well as a plethora of bird species. The county also serves as the gateway to the Terry Badlands Wilderness Study Area, which features the magnificent Calypso Trail. The trail presents stunning, unspoiled views of the rugged prairie just as it was 100+ years earlier. Brochures for the trail are available at various places throughout Terry. You can also request that a hiking brochure or birding brochure be mailed to you.

Get Going

Along the Frontage Road, once part of Old Highway 10 just outside Fallon, is a well-maintained boat ramp with public access to the Yellowstone River for fishermen, kayaks, and canoes. Experienced river enthusiasts with small watercraft can also put in along the Powder River underneath the railroad bridge west of Terry.

Discover & Experience

Not to mention, Prairie County is prime agate hunting territory. Agate is a form of chalcedony, which is one of the many varieties of quartz. “Agate season” begins in the spring, after ice jams and winter’s snow melt have churned up a fresh selection of agates along river banks and sloping hillsides. However, reaching great locations can be difficult and treacherous.  Searching for agates in the fall is often more rewarding, when accessing trails is easier and water levels in rivers and creeks are lower.

Whether you are here to hunt big game, fish, bird watch, or just stretch your legs, we are here to help make your experience a good one.
